Understorey (less than 3m)

This fence surrounds a small plot of land in the montane scrub zone on Mt Taranaki.  It established in 1973 (black and white photo) to gauge the effects of goats.  Since then, goat hunting has reduced goat numbers with the result that the vegetation has grown significantly – both inside and outside the fence (colour photo 1999).
