How to Use Pest Detective
Pest Detective is essentially a search tool. You can start searching in two different ways, depending on what you want to know.
- Clues: if you have field sign you wish to identify, or
- Culprits: if you suspect a particular species or simply want to know more about certain pest animals.
Once you have identified your culprit(s) go to the Next Steps page for links to about pest control and pest animal monitoring.
How to use Pest Detective in the field?
Pest Detective can be used on mobile devices (no special app is required).
Where internet coverage is doubtful, you can download and save chosen pages from Pest Detective as PDFs onto your mobile device or print them out before you go. You won't be able to enlarge the photos and longer image captions though. To download, either:
- Go to your desired page; select 'Print' from the browser menu (usually top right of screen); select 'Print to PDF' or 'PDF Creator' from the print options; select 'Print'. The resulting PDF will show all the images as well as text on the page (although not in the enlarged pop-up size).
or
- print the page(s) onto paper using the same browser menu as above.
The National Broadband Map is a useful way of checking the areas covered by most internet network providers. Remember, however, that internet may not be available in all places within coverage areas e.g. deep gullies where the signal might not reach.
We can investigate making Pest Detective fully accessible offline if there is enough demand.
